OMAHA, NE – Pitching was the story of the day on Sunday at TD Ameritrade Park as Virginia blanked Tennessee 6-0 and Mississippi State held on to beat Texas 2-1.
Andrew Abbott and Matt Wyatt combined for a 6-hit shutout as the Cavaliers earned their place in the winner’s bracket. Meanwhile, in the nightcap, Will Bednar led the way for the Bulldogs, striking out 15 Longhorns in six shutout innings. Landon Sims came on in relief and struck out another 6 to close out the victory.
Virginia and Mississippi State will square off Tuesday night with the winner getting an inside track on a spot in the best-of-three championship series. Meanwhile, the Volunteers and Longhorns will play an elimination game on Tuesday afternoon.
